Restoring Strength, Function &
Beauty to Your Tooth

What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers a damaged or weakened tooth, restoring its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crafted from durable materials, they provide long-lasting protection and natural aesthetics.

Crowns are typically recommended when a tooth:

  • Is cracked, fractured, or severely worn

  • Has received a root canal and needs extra fortification

  • Requires support for a large filling

  • Needs cosmetic enhancement for discolouration or misshapennes

Benefits of Dental Crowns

Choosing a dental crown is about more than restoring a tooth, it’s about protecting your oral health. We provide both traditional and same-day CEREC crowns, giving you options that fit your needs and schedule.

  • Long-lasting durability — with proper care, crowns can last for many years, making them a reliable investment in your oral health.

  • Tooth protection — crowns reinforce weakened or damaged teeth, preventing further breakage and preserving natural structure.

  • Cosmetic enhancement — each crown is colour-matched and shaped to blend seamlessly with your natural smile.

  • Same-day convenience with CEREC — using advanced CAD/CAM technology, we design, mill, and place all-ceramic crowns in just one appointment.

Dental Crowns FAQs

Dental crowns typically last 10 to 15 years, but with excellent oral hygiene and regular check-ups, many patients enjoy their crowns well beyond that. Daily brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings at our Ottawa dental office help extend the life of your crown.

Not always. A root canal is only required if the tooth is infected or the nerve is compromised. Many patients receive dental crowns simply to strengthen a cracked or worn tooth, or to improve aesthetics, without needing root canal treatment.

Yes! We offer same-day CEREC crowns using advanced CAD/CAM technology. This allows us to design, create, and place a permanent all-ceramic crown in just one visit, no temporary crown or second appointment needed.

Getting a crown is a comfortable procedure. We use local anesthesia to numb the area, so you won’t feel pain during treatment. Some patients may experience mild sensitivity afterward, but this usually subsides within a few days.

Caring for a crown is just like caring for your natural teeth—brush twice daily, floss carefully around the crown, and schedule regular dental visits. Avoid chewing on ice or very hard foods to prevent unnecessary wear.

If your crown comes loose or falls out, contact Pretoria Bridge Dental right away. Avoid chewing on that side and keep the crown safe. In many cases, we can re-cement it or recommend a replacement.
